d. Committees

(1)   No faculty member shall serve on more than two faculty committees (excluding ad hoc committees).

(2)   Committee appointments are for one year and shall begin as soon as committee assignments are made at the beginning of the fall semester.

(3)   Chairpersons are elected by the committee.  The chairperson of any committee must serve at least one year before becoming chair.

(4)   A person may serve on one committee for no more than three consecutive years, except as follows:

(5)   On the elected committees, if none of the division representatives or first four members elected have at least one year’s service on the committee, the faculty shall elect the fifth member from among those having previous service on the committee, regardless of the three‑year limit.

(6)   On the appointed committees, if no one is available who has one year’s service, one member can be appointed, disregarding the three‑year limit.

(7)Committees act on behalf of, and are responsible to, the faculty.  Committees initiate policy subject to final approval of the Board of Trustees and carry out actions delegated by the Board of Trustees through the administration.  The faculty may delegate decisions to committees and may amend or reverse committee actions.  Committees shall report to the Faculty Senate as requested.

(8)   Ad hoc committees may be assigned to perform functions not the responsibility of any one of the standing committees.  Any member of the college community may propose the establishment of an ad hoc committee, which will be authorized by the academic dean.  The dean will approve the membership and responsibility of the ad hoc committee in consultation with the parties concerned.  The dean will notify the Faculty Senate.
