The Lark (1953, 1955 English translation) written by Jean Anouilh (1910-1987) translation by Christopher Fry
performed November 2-4, 2003 in the Zula Pearson Theatre
The Lark was entered into the 2003-2004 American College Theatre Festival held at the campus of UT Tyler and received numerous awards at the State level.
The Lark recounts the compelling story of Joan of Arc with all its intrigue. LMC's production featured cutting-edge multimedia providing a contemporary look at this historical tale.
Director's Notes "In reference to The Lark, playwright Jean Anouilh once wrote 'You cannot explain the tiniest of flower growing by the wayside... There's just the phenomenon of Joan, as there is the phenomenon of a daisy or the sky or of a bird. What pretnetious creatures men are, if that's not enough for them.' For me, Anouilh's perspective on Joan is far from pretentious. He handles material with great care, respect, and fascination. Rather than try to explain Joan, Anouilh seems to work to explain man's need to condem, exploit, and persecute the phenomenon of Joan. In this production, I've tried to stay true to Anouilh's purpose, while also emphasizing man's need to record historical phenomenon, and label that interpretive recording as truth."
