A: Service Learning is a program for students to learn and develop through active participation in throughtfully organized service projects that are conducted in and meet the needs of the community. Service Learning enhances the academic curriculum and incudes structured time for students, faculty, and community participants to reflect on the service experience.
Q: What are the benefits of the program? A: 1. Working closely with faculty members who are commited to service learning 2. Having a "hands on" learning experience 3. Applying academic knowledge and skills to real problems 4. Making a difference in the community by giving to those who are less fortunate 5. Earning the "Service Learning Scholar" transcript and diploma seal on graduation
Q: Who can sign up for Service Learning? A: Freshman entering in the Fall 2004 semester will be offered two academic tracks for each degree: a regular track or the track with Service Learning. Any student may apply.
Q: Why should I choose the Service Learning track? A: 1. To experience the joy of serving others 2. Four-year universities look favorably on students that exhibit records of service which could result in additional scholarship aid 3. Studies have shown that having the Service Learning transcript with the academic transcript enhances an individual's employability 4. Lifetime leadership skills are taught throughout the program 5. Cultivating a lifetime of service reaps many rewards
Q: Will I earn credit hours for being a part of Service Learning at Lon Morris? A: Yes.
Q: How many hours of service would be required each semester? A: A minimum of 24 hours (two per week) of service are required each semester.
Q: What are some examples of Service Learning projects? A: There are many opportunities for projects. These may include: * Tutoring in the elementary and middle schools * Working with the soup kitchen or other projects serving the disadvantaged in the Jacksonville area * Volunteering for the after-school program for underprivileged children * Assisting in adult literacy program
